Childhood
obesity is one of the alarming public health challenges of the 21st century.
The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income
countries, particularly in urban settings. The number of cases has more
than tripled in the past 30 years.
Overweight
is defined as the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk
to health. Also, it is due to the caloric imbalance (too few calories expended
for the amount of calories consumed). Besides that, childhood obesity is also
affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.
As
such, every adult should take preventive methods to curb this health
challenge. Here are some methods:
- Healthy lifestyle habits
- Increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts
- Be physically active
- Limit energy intake from total fats and sugars
2. Parents role
- Train children to walk more than using strollers
- Let children to run around and not place them in play pens
- Have meals as a family and encourage healthy eating
3. Breastfeeding
- Exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months old and continue breastfeeding till 2 years old
- Introduce complimentary food from 6 months onwards
4. Schools
- Establish a safe and supportive environment
- Provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors
